Willie T. Helms, Sr.
Augusta, GA – Willie T. Helms, Sr., 84, 1st SGT, US ARMY Retired, and beloved husband of 63 years to Mrs. Patricia Horton Helms, went to his Heavenly Home on Friday, January 23, 2015 at University Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at Hillcrest Baptist Church on Monday, January 26, 2015 at 1:00 P.M., with the Reverend Todd Wiggins and The Reverend Dr. L. Gordon Robinson officaiting. Mr. Helms will lie in state at the church from 12:00 P.M. until the hour of the service. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park with full military honors.
Mr. Helms, a native of Barbour County, AL, was the son of the late Thomas Eddie and Shelley Mae Creel Helms. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army, served two tours in Vietnam and received two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars and one Silver Star for his service and retired in 1979 with the Rank of First Sergeant. Following the Army he worked in the Loan Department of the Georgia Railroad Bank for several years. He was also an accomplished Horticulturist and the owner and operator of Helms Nursery. Mr. Helms was a Mason and a member of Richmond Lodge # 412 as well as the Easter Star Richmond Chapter #463. He was an active member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church where he was a member of the Harold Smith Coed Sunday School Class.
Mr. Helms was preceded in death by his son, Willie T. Helms, Jr.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his daughters, Theresa Griffith (Glenn) and Wanda Murfee (the late Carl); a daughter-in-law, Cindy Helms Wolfe; brother, Clifton Helms (Norma); five grandchildren, Sandy Bennett (Quinn), Summer Garner (Tommy) Willie T. Helms, III (Grace), Michael Griffith and Ryan Helms; five great grandchildren, Michael Trip Bennett, Tricia and Payton Garner, and Cora and David Lollar, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Harold Smith Coed Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
