William Lee McElhaney, U.S. ARMY, RET

Appling, GA – William Lee McElhaney, 88, beloved husband of the late Gerda M. McElhaney, entered into rest on Sunday, December 31, 2017.

Funeral services, with full military honors, will be held from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at 2:00 P.M., with Chaplain Michael Metcalf officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. McElhaney a native of Gore, Oklahoma, was the son of the late Jasper and Jewell McElhaney. He had lived in the Appling and Leah area having come to Fort Gordon in service with the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars having retired after 28 years with the rank of Master Sergeant. Following his military service Mr. McElhaney worked and retired as a Communications Instructor at Fort Gordon. He was well loved and respected by those with whom he worked and enjoyed sharing vegetables with all of his friends from his garden. He was a loving man to whom his family was his priority and made a point to spend his free time with them.

Survivors include his children, William Lynn McElhaney and his wife Carol of Upper Lake, CA, Barbara Truchinski and her husband Jerry of Greer, SC, Robert E. McElhaney and his wife Sally of Grovetown, Thomas McElhaney and his wife Traci of Lincolnton, GA,; his sisters, Carolyn Mayes and her husband E.J. and Dolly Smith all of Muskogee, OK; six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
