William G Wingate Jr

Augusta, GA – William G Wingate Jr., husband of Mary Elizabeth (Young) Wingate, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born November 23, 1940, in Rock Hill, SC to Ruby and William G. Wingate Sr.

He served in the Navy on the USS Boston and then attended Wingate College in Monroe, NC. He was managing partner for Pry Wing for 43 years. They owned Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise.

He was very passionate about his University of South Carolina Gamecocks, golf and especially the Masters.

He loved his family, countless friends, beloved wife “Lib” and four-legged companion, Stella as well as his church family at Hephzibah United Methodist Church.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Donnie Wingate, and granddaughter Abigail.

He is survived by his wife, Lib, his three sons, William G. Wingate III, “Trey” (Manon), Jonathon W. Wingate Sr “Johnny” (Amanda), and Allan W. Wingate (Amanda), his grandchildren, Jonathon W. Wingate Jr., Austin W. Wingate, William G. Wingate IV (Raylyn), E. Hope Wingate, Leilani V. Walker, Emmabelle R. Wingate, Landon B. Wingate, and Annalise F. Wingate, as well as his brother, Alex Wingate (Peggy), his sister-in-law, Dale Wingate, and numerous nephews and nieces.

The family will welcome friends at the visitation at 10:00 o’clock a.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at Hephzibah United Methodist Church. The funeral will immediately follow at 11:00 o’clock a.m., followed by the burial at Brothersville Cemetery. Lunch will be provided immediately for family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Jonathon Wingate Jr, Austin Wingate, William Wingate IV, Landon Wingate, Thomas Wingate, Andy Wingate, Rich Polson, Matt Creech, Craig Franklin, and Gary Martin.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to their church, Hephzibah United Methodist, PO Box 65, Hephzibah, GA 30815.

    Prayers are with the Wingate family.
    Bill was a lot of fun to be around, always had a story or a joke.
    I know he was happy that the Gamecocks finally won the South Carolina state football championship this year!
    Bill will be missed.

  2. Lib, I just saw this and I am so very sorry. I really love both of you! Billy was such a joy to be around.
    I am down with the flu but will call after a few days, if you feel like talking. Again, I am so sorry.

  3. Mr. Wingate was one of a kind. He was a giver, a server, he loved his God and his family, and would do anything for his friends. I feel blessed to have known him and heart broken that he’s gone. But we know he is in the arms of the Lord, out of pain and any sadness from this old world and will experience a Christmas like he has never experienced in his lifetime. Rejoice in the Lord, Mr. Wingate! May you Rest In Peace. Your work on earth is done!

    I was saddened to hear of Billy’s passing. Praying for you and your entire family during this difficult time. He leaves a wonderful legacy of family, good friends and much laughter and fond memories of a life well lived. He touched many lives…. in his family, the neighborhood and within the community. He will be greatly missed, but we celebrate his life of success and service to those around him.
