William “Bill” Hagler Hughes
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 8, 2014, at 12:00 noon, from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors with Reverend J.D. Turner officiating.
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mr. Hughes was born May 6, 1938, to William Christian Hughes and Laura Belle Bunch Hughes. Due to his parentsâ?? early death he was raised in Lutheran Childrenâ??s Home of the South, in Salem, VA, where he treasured his over 100 brothers and sisters. He cherished his foster parents, Lester and Myrtie Stanley and his foster siblings, Jack, Danny, and Emily Stanley.
He retired from the United States Navy and the United States Post Office. He also worked as a farmer for many years, raising AQHA and APHC horses, cows, and hay. He was a charter member of Pine Hill Baptist Church.
Billâ??s defining characteristic was a profound gratitude and enthusiasm for the everyday blessings of life. Godâ??s creatures, the beauties of nature, smiles he shared with friends and strangers alike. He instilled in those around him care and support for the less fortunate and the least among us. He held a deep but quiet faith in God and looked forward to being with his Lord, Jesus.
His last request of his friends and family Electronic Cigarette is to be aware of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis; a terrible disease. He asks that people familiarize themselves with it and share what they learn in hope of finding a cure.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 24 years, Juanita Seago Hughes.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Karen Hughes Killgore, and her husband, John E., of Wilson, NC, and Cynthia Ann Hughes, of Brunswick, GA; his sons, John Davis, of Atlanta, and Paul Gordon Davis, of Philadelphia, PA; his granddaughters, Hannah Marie Killgore, and Hailey Grace Killgore; and his brother, Leonard Hughes and his wife, Liz, of Hopewell, VA. He also leaves behind a multitude of treasured animal friends: two horses, Blossom and Hardy, Tizzie, the Invisible cat, and dogs, Romeo, Tillie, Annie, and Cotton
Active pallbearers will be John Davis, Paul Davis, Terry Seago, Barry McFeat, Bill Reeves, and Joe Cochran.
Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Tison, Jack Stanley, Danny Stanley, and Leonard Hughes.
