Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors, with Reverend Billy Alford and Buckey Sommers officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mr. Cockrell, son of the late Rufus Patterson Cockrell and Eunice Hammett Andrews, was born in Augusta, Georgia and was an Episcopalian. He served in the US Navy in WWII. After the war, he worked at Georgia Power Company as a Line Foreman for 40 years and retired in 1986.
Rufus was a member of the Fleming Masonic Lodge #718 since 1961. He was also a 32° Mason of the Scottish Rite. In his spare time he enjoyed wood working and coaching future Masons.
In addition to his beloved wife of 71 years, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Lynda and Jimmy Williamson of Hephzibah, Georgia and his son and daughter-in-law Danny and Becky Cockrell of Evans, Georgia. He was the adored grandfather of Shelley Henry (Stephen), Michael Williamson (Caroline), Stacey Cockrell and Scott Cockrell (Stephanie). He is also survived by five great grandchildren, Shane Henry, Hannah Cockrell, Chandler Williamson and identical twin Cockrell boys arriving in June. Pallbearers will be Michael Williamson, Scott Cockrell, Stephen Henry, Shane Henry, Hal Taylor and Billy Harris. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Fleming Masonic Lodge #718. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the kind and loving care given by Ann Taylor and Francis Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22311.
The family will receive friends Monday, March 31, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home, Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors, 2502 Richmond Hill Road, Augusta, Georgia.
