Roy L. Garrard, Sr
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at 11:00 AM from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors with Dr. William F. Harrell officiating.
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mr. Garrard was born in Augusta, GA, on December 23, 1922. He attended Richmond Academy and was a US Army veteran of WWII. As a member of the “Greatest Generation” he served in the Combat Engineers as an electrician. Having lost his father as an infant, he started working at age 12 to help his mother who had three sons to raise. He had an early interest in electricity and entered the electrical profession in 1938. He was the youngest person to ever pass the Augusta, GA city electrical exam. He founded the Roy Garrard Electrical Contracting business in 1955 and was in the commercial electrical contracting business for many years. His electrical projects in the Augusta area were extensive to include schools, churches, hospitals, nursing homes, banks, colleges, shopping centers, post offices, motels, hotels, manufacturing plants, libraries, restaurants, high rise apartments, parking decks, athletic fields, street lighting, and auto dealerships.
Mr. Garrard was President of the Georgia Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association, Charter member of Local 1579 IBEW, on the Board of St. Joseph’s Hospital, President of the Richmond Academy Boosters Club, President of Augusta Little League Baseball, President of Augusta Gideons, Board of the City of Augusta Electrical Examiners, the Augusta Builders Exchange, Augusta Chamber of Commerce, the Augusta Rescue Mission Board, and the YMCA.
Mr. Garrard was instrumental in the founding and beginnings of the Augusta Rescue Mission. He was one of the original organizers and contributors to the first mission and the current facility on Walker Street. H was active in his church, served several churches faithfully during his life, and in his later years was a member of Baker Woods Baptist Church and Abilene Baptist Church. He was known for his generosity in business and in his personal life. He was an avid University of Georgia fan.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Crawford G. Garrard, Sr, and Ruth Green Garrard, and by his older brother, Crawford G. Garrard, Jr.
In addition to his wife Sara Elizabeth Garrard, he is survived by his sons, R. Lamar Garrard Jr (Ruth), Jerry B. Garrard (Ruth); his daughters, Pamela G. Chartrand (Bob), and Wanda G. Trimm; his stepsons, Wade Mixon (Frieda), and Brian Mixon (Sandy); his stepdaughter, Melinda M. Finneyfrock (Larry); and his brother, Jack E. Garrard (Laverne). Mr. Garrard had 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 24, 2015, from 10:00 AM until the hour of service at the funeral home.
