Robert Carey

Augusta, GA – Mr. Robert Carey, 86, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the Charlie Norwood Veterans Medical Center. He was born March 26, 1929 in Brownfield, Pennsylvania, the youngest son of Raffaele and Caterina Mereglia Carino.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 at 11:00 A.M., in the Mausoleum chapel of Hillcrest Memorial Park with Reverend Sherrell Dunn officiating.

He was a retired US Army veteran, with a career that spanned 20 years form 1946 to 1966. He served as a mounted Constabulary patrolling the German and Greek borders at the end of the World War II in the late 40’s and instructed jujitsu as a Drill Sergeant in the 60’s. His last assignment was in Vietnam, taveling extensively as an Engineer, establishing bases for U.S. service members during the war for then Major General Westmoreland. After the military, Mr. Carey worked for City of Augusta, Georgia Transportation Office as a mechanic and forman for another 27 years before retiring in 1993. He was also a member of Curtis Baptist Church, Masonic Social Lodge #1, Scottish Rite #63 and the American Legion.

He is survived by his third wife Edith Agner Carey of Augusta; four children, Mildred (Kevin) Hayes of New Castle, DE, Bobbie (Fred) Steele of Newark, DE, Ralph (Sherri) Carey of Wilmington, DE and Theresa (Mark) Allaband of Doyline, LA; eight grandchildren, Penny McIntosh, Sandy Presley, Alicia Presley, Chris Steele, Rob Steele, Brandon Carey all of Delaware, Katrina Moerk of Maryland and Julie Johnson of Louisianna and eleven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Marie Carino, Rose Baunoch, Carmela Sechler, Frances Lee and Anna Kefover; and two brothers, Charles Carino and Floyd “Eagle” Carey and his first two wives Gloria Edwards Carey and Lois Rayburn Carey.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Fisher House Foundation 111 Rockville Pike Ste. 420, Rockville, MD 20850-5168.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the funeral home.

  1. I would like to send my sincerest condolences to the family of Mr. Bob. I was his neighbor for years and also my mother, Minnie, had the pleasure of serving as his caretaker. Mr. Bob will truly be missed and I will keep your family in my prayers.
