Iva Jean “Sister” Chavous Iva Jean “Sister” Chavous, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at the age of 88. She was surrounded by her loving family. A funeral service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at 11:00 PM at Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 7, 2025, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Jean was born on June 24, 1936, in Leah, Georgia, to the late John (J.E.) and Ruth Blanchard. She lived a life marked by love, laughter, and unwavering kindness, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her. Jean's life was one of deep connection to her family. She met the love of her life, Jack Chavous, in 1955, and they married on December 16, 1955, a date that also marked Jack's birthday. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised five children: Angie Nations, Wendy (Robin) Chavous, Steven (Theresa) Chavous, Jay (Tonja) Chavous, and Rhetta (Ray) Story. Jean was a devoted wife, and Jack preceded her in death in 2008. She was of the Holiness faith. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Wendell and Julian Blanchard, and her sister, Sarah Reynolds. Jean is survived by her brother, Larry Blanchard, and her sister, Anita Gregg. Jean's greatest joy came from her role as a grandmother. She cherished every moment spent with her thirteen grandchildren: Phillip, Stephanie, Michelle, Devin, Wendell, Shay, Tyler, Jonah, and Chase. Her love extended to her twelve great-grandchildren, whom she adored. Anyone who witnessed Jean with her grand and great-grandchildren could see the depth of her love and devotion. Beyond her family, Jean had a zest for life. She loved going dancing, and she nurtured her relationships through heartfelt letters of encouragement and endearment to her family and friends. She also enjoyed games of chance, and the word "BINGO!" often brought a smile to her face. Jean was known for her gentle and compassionate nature, always prioritizing the needs of others. She was adored and loved by many. Jean will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends and extended family. Her warmth, generosity, and unwavering love will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her. Jean’s seven grandsons will proudly serve as pallbearers at her funeral service.
