Mr. Galen Freeman

Augusta, GA – Mr. Galen Porter Freeman, 92, beloved husband of Mrs. Rebecca Freeman, entered into rest on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at University Hospital.

A memorial service will be held from Wesley United Methodist Church on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at 3:00 P.M., with Reverend Greg Porterfield and Reverend Pat Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Gardens of Wesley United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 P.M. until the hour of the service.

Mr Freeman, a native of Ashville, NC had made Augusta his home for most of his life. Galen graduated from Fairview High School and attended Mars Hill College. He had an outstanding record at both schools, particularly in athletics. He was co-captain of the Mars Hill basketball team. In 1944 Freeman enlisted in the Army and received his training at Kissler Field, MS and Detroit, MI. He served 18 months in the China-India-Burma Theater with the 1342 Army Air Force Unit. While serviing in China he flew the famous “HUMP” many times. At the end of World War II he was transferred to Calcutta, India until he returned to the states.

Mr. Freeman was an Accountant all of his life and owned his own business, Freeman’s Accounting. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he was active in the Journeys Sunday School Class and was a Shriner. He enjoyed traveling and had been blessed to travel all over the world with Mrs. Freeman. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and never said a bad word about anyone.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his children, Galen Porter Freeman, Jr., Colette Freeman Clark, Cynthia O’Byrne and her husband George; a sister, Jeanie Bass; his grandchildren, Lisa Noland (Jeff), Bryan O’Byrne (Caroline), Christy O’Byrne (Benjamin); great grandchildren, Chase Noland, Elaina Noland, Courtney O’Byrne (Tanner), Caila Floyd and Christopher O’Byrne; and a little boy that held a special place in Mr. Freeman’s heart, Bradley Ferguson.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Journeys Sunday School Class at Wesley United Methodist Church, 825 N. Belair Road, Evans, GA, 30809.
