Mildred Martin

Augusta, GA – Mrs. Mildred Mallard Martin, 80, entered into rest on Friday, March 28, 2014 at Medical College of Georgia.

Funeral services will be on Monday March 31, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors with Reverend Billy Atkins officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.

Pall bearers will be Anders Martin, Christopher Rhea, Hugh Mallard, Chip Cochran, James Click, Jr. and Chuck Martin

She was born in Burke County, Georgia on September 19, 1933 to the late Lonnie and Evelyn Campbell Mallard. She graduated from Girard High School and attended Augusta Business College while living at the YWCA on Greene Street. She worked at Augusta Coach Company and Weathers Transfer and Storage Company until she decided to stay home and raise her 4 children.

She was the school crossing guard at Roy E. Rollins Elementary School for 31 years where she loved the children that walked to school, often giving them treats when they crossed the intersection. She also turned her attention to her involvement in the numerous school, sports, scouts and civic organizations that her children, grandchildren and their friends were involved in by serving as a room mother, field trip chaperone, PTA officer, scout leader and booster club member. She still found time to spend countless hours raising money for many charitable organization over the years.

She was currently a member of the Edmund Burke Chapter of the DAR and the Burkeland Garden Club which provided her with the opportunity to spend time with her two surviving sisters, Margie Cochran and Jeanette Click. She was a member of Bethany Methodist Church of Girard.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother James Mallard, sister Mary Crews and three infant grandsons.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Leonard T. Martin, three sons and daughters-in-laws Terry and Abbie Martin, Shreveport, La; Robert and Becky Martin, Martinez, Philip and Kari Martin, Augusta; one daughter and son-in-law, Leigh Ann and Mark Schmitz, Martinez; grandchildren Rhiannon Martin, Anders and Carlie Martin, Walker Martin, Harper Martin, Christopher Rhea, Rebekah Martin, Nathan, Noah, Chandler and Jacob Schmitz; one great grandson, Asher Martin; sisters and their husbands Margie and James Cochran and Jeanette and Melvin Click.

If so desired memorial contributions can be made to Bethany Methodist Church 9727 Ga Hwy., 23 South Girard, GA 30426.

The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M., at the funeral home.

  1. Mr. Martin, Terry, Robert, Phillip and Leigh Ann, We were so saddened to hear this morning of Mrs. Martin’s passing. We were preparing to leave for home from a trip to Florida when a friend called us. We are so sorry we were not able to be their to offer our condolences in person. May God be with you and may you feel his presence during this most difficult time of losing someone so very dear to your hearts.
