Michael Wayne Parnell

Hephzibah, GA – Mr. Michael Wayne “Mike” Parnell married to Wanda Carter Parnell for 50 years August 7, 1967, both are from Lancaster, SC and moved to Augusta in 1971. Mike was 70 years old at the time of his passing.

Mike and Wanda were blessed with one son Ashley Jason Parnell of Augusta on December 25, 1976 and one grandson Ayden Azreal Parnell of Florence, MA.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 4:00 P.M., in Fleming Baptist Church with Reverend Patrick Latta officiating.

He was born in Lancaster, SC to Owen and Arline Weaver Parnell on May 17, 1946. Both parents have passed away.

Mike was educated in Lancaster School and graduated in 1964 from Lancaster High School. After Mike and Wanda married Mike went to Vietnam one week later, and returned 13 months later after his tour in 1967-1968. Mike was in Army.

Mike is also survived by his brother, Richard Parnell of Rock Hill, SC and one sister, Judy Vincent (Ray) of Lancaster, SC. Mike was 7 years old when his mother passed away. Mike spent a lot of time with his cousin Jeane (Cecil) McManus. She felt as though Mike was one of her children. His father and grandmother Ruth Jordan, also had a major roll in his childhood.

Mike went home to be with his Heavenly Father at Doctor’s Hospital on April 22, 2017. Mike had a double lung transplant in November 2006. He lived a full life for 10 years 5 months because of the care he received from Emory Hospital in Atlanta, GA and because of the caring parents of the lungs he received. He was active in Fleming Baptist Church on Hwy 25 in Augusta.

Mike and his wife Wanda were very active members of the Family Y on Wheeler Road and they loved to travel and made many trips to MA to visit their son and grandson.

In honor of Mike donations can be made to Fleming Baptist Church 3027 Peach Orchard Road Augusta, GA 30906 or to support Wanda in the Augusta Care Pregnancy Center “Walk for Life” PO Box 1775 Augusta, GA 30903. The walk is Saturday, May 6, 2017 in Augusta. This was one of the things that he was so passionate about.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3:00 until 4:00 P.M., at the church.

  2. I knew Mike from days at Brooklyn Avenue Elementary and though high school. Though quiet was a very thoughtful and considerate friend. We were just a couple weeks apart in age.

    My condolences to Mike’s family. My prayers are with you.
