She spent her early years in Augusta, GA. Upon graduation from high school, she was married and in 1952 began her career with the Federal government at Fort Gordon. In 1958 they moved to Jacksonville where she continued her government career by acquiring a job with the VA. From there she moved on to the IRS and then the Department of Public Heath Services, ending with her retirement from Social Security Department of Hearings and Appeals, in 1999. After retirement she continued to work part time for several years and had over forty-five years with the Federal government.
Martha loved taking care of and spending time with not only her immediate family but all of her extended family. She always had a kind spirit and always had a smile on her face for whomever she came in contact with. She was an outstanding cook and loved being involved with and attending church. She was a member of North Jacksonville Baptist Church. She also loved “piddling around” on the piano and organ and listening to Southern Gospel music. One of her favorite pastimes was spending time in her yard growing beautiful flowers and tea olive trees. She was a fabulous flower arranger and enjoyed making beautiful arrangements, especially at Christmas.
