William Miller Mims

Augusta GA - William Miller Mims, age 98, entered into rest Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Pruitt Health Augusta Hills, Augusta GA. Mr. Mims was born in Hephzibah, GA to the late Fred Henry Mims and the late Nellie Ray Mims. He attended Hephzibah High School and helped his father with their farm. He then enlisted in the Army and served as a Central Office Technician with the 3186th Signal Service Battalion in Toyko, Japan. During his time there he supervised military personnel in the installation, testing and maintenance of communication equipment. After serving in the Army, Mr. Mims met and married Margaret James to whom he was married for over 75 years. After moving to Augusta, Mr. Mims went to work for the Interstate Insurance Agency, later changed to Gulf Life, and retired from the company after over 40 years. Mr. Mims loved his garden and especially growing tomatoes. One of his favorite things to do was to give away his tomatoes to family and friends. Mr. Mims enjoyed hearing his daughter, Debra, sing and play during church and other family functions. Up until his eyesight failed him, he loved playing golf with his son and going on the occasional fishing trip. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Mims Kirkland. Mr. Mims is survived by his wife, his son Gregory W. Mims of Statesboro, his son-in-law Steve Kirkland of Augusta, his grandchildren, Jeffrey D. Mims of Augusta, Kelleye and Justin Kowal of Evans, Jana and Josh Bolin of Texas, and Bradley Kirkland. He was blessed to have 4 great grandchildren, Mackenzie Kowal, Colton Kowal, Thatcher Bolin and Capp Bolin. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Thursday, December 14, 2023 in the chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors at 2:00 PM with Reverend Wayne Usry officiating. Interment will be at Hephzibah – Vance Cemetery. Visitation will be at 1:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral home.
