Thomas Langdon Atkins Sr.

Thomas Langdon Atkins, Sr. entered into rest Thursday morning September 25, 2025. Thomas was born on August 13, 1946 in Augusta, Georgia, the second son of Joseph Emmitt Atkins and Rhoda Eugenia Avret Atkins. He is preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Joseph E. Atkins, Jr., by his sister Mary Atkins Harris, and by Marieta B. Hobbs, the mother of his children. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Carolyn Holman Brown, and his three younger brothers – Harris Atkins (and his wife Lynn), James Atkins (and his wife Elaine) and Allen Atkins (and his wife Janet) and their children and families – and by his children – Thomas Langdon Atkins, Jr., Stacy Atkins (and Leslie), Jason Atkins (and Tammy), and Jonathan Atkins (and Amy) – his three stepchildren – Tommy Lee, Jenny Odom (her husband Bruce), and Zachary Badger (and his wife Ashley) – and also by his twenty-eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Thomas was a lifelong resident of Richmond County and a member of the second graduating class of George P. Butler High School in 1964. He joined the United States Air Force in 1964, serving in Oklahoma and in Guam as a chaplain until he was honorably discharged in 1968. Somewhere along the way, he picked up the nickname “Ringo” because of his resemblance to the Beatles drummer. Thomas married the daughter of his commanding officer and, after his service, moved her to Augusta and had four children between 1971-1978. He later remarried in the 1990s, adding three stepchildren to his family. Thomas graduated from Augusta College after his service and worked at BellSouth from his initial hiring climbing telephone poles in 1964 until retiring as an engineer in 2001. He then joined the engineering department with Richmond County until 2010. Thomas served on the Richmond County School Board in the 1980s, was a member of several local civic and social organizations throughout his life, and he was a member and former pastor of Berlin Methodist Church. Visitation will be held at 2pm Monday Sept. 29 at Chance & Hydrick Funeral Home, followed by a service at 3pm. All are welcome. Burial at the Atkins-Winter family cemetery in Hephzibah will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, Thomas would appreciate any donations in his memory be made to the Hephzibah Agricultural Club or to Berlin Methodist Church.
