Letha Nurse Educator

Letha Lierman, RN, Ph.D., 72, entered into rest on Wednesday, February 27, 2013. A memorial service will be held at St. John United Methodist Church, 736 Greene Street, 11:00 am Wednesday March the sixth with the Reverend Gary DeMore officiating. A native of Oregon, Dr. Lierman lived in Augusta for the past 22 years. She is predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Velura Ruth Lierman of Stayton, Oregon, sister-in-law Lucille Lierman, nephew Loel Lierman, and her dog Buffy. Letha is survived by her brothers Robert and Wayne (Patricia) Lierman, her nephews Ronald (Pamela), Richard (Kristen) and Steven (Mary) Lierman, her nieces Cheryl Sprauer (Joe), Linda Czapala (Mike), Rhonda Lierman, and her beloved dog, Dixie. Dr. Lierman was a teacher of nurses for over 35 years. Most recently Professor Emeritus at Augusta State University, she served as Chair of the ASU Department of Nursing until her retirement in 2002. She then served for several years as Coordinator of the ASU Japanese Nursing Student Seminar. Prior to joining ASU, she was Associate Professor and Chair, Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing Department at MCG. Dr. Lierman's long career included faculty positions at the Universities of Washington, Utah, Nevada-Reno, and Oregon. Letha received a B.S. in Nursing from the University of Oregon, an M.S.N. from the Catholic University of America, and the Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Utah. Letha's life of service extended beyond her professional endeavors to include many volunteer activities. She was a faithful member of St. John United Methodist Church, singing in the Chancel Choir, serving on various committees, and helping with the live and recorded audio of Sunday morning services. In recent times, Letha served on the St. John Staff as Parish Nurse. In this capacity she tirelessly provided care and comfort to shut-ins, the sick, the hospitalized, and the dying. At St. John Letha was a member of the Pacesetters, the United Methodist Women, and the "Misfits" Sunday School Class. Dr. Lierman's community activities included serving as Secretary for the New Bethlehem Community Center Board of Directors and volunteering with Downtown Cooperative Church Ministries (DCCM). She served on the Board of the Augusta Family YMCA and was Treasurer of the Augusta Opera Guild. Letha was an energetic, thoughtful, feisty, and kind person, who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She loved God, her family and friends, her church, her dogs, and her red convertible PT Cruiser. She enjoyed music, movies, baseball, going to lunch after church, and life. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 AM until the hour of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John UMC (P.O. Box 444, Augusta 30903) or DCCM.
