Mr. Hooks was born in Soperton, GA, in 1940, and was the son of the late Herbert and Minnie Mae (Kight) Hooks. Mr. Hooks had four siblings that he loved dearly.  Mr. Hooks was an avid family man and amazing storyteller who cherished memories of growing up with his large family.  He often reflected about his childhood and farm life in South Georgia.

Mr. Hooks, and his high school sweetheart and life-long love, Ms. Jean Hooks Waters, were 1960 graduates of the Academy of Richmond County. After graduation, Mr. Hooks was a successful insurance agent for many years with Nationwide Insurance company. He had many other successful small businesses ranging from restaurants to car dealerships. He also served the community as an elected Justice of the Peace.

Known as Papa, or Uncle Jerry to many, there was nothing that Mr. Hooks loved more than being outside, fishing, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, that he referred to as his “sunshine’s”.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Herbert and Minnie Mae (Kight) Hooks; brother, Donald “Dinkie” Hooks; his sisters, Bonnie Claxton, Anita Palacz; and his daughter, Melody Hooks.

Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors at 12 o’clock PM, on Saturday, May 28th, 2022, with Pastor Tony Rhodes officiating, and Mr. Hooks’ nephews, Don Hooks, Philip Palacz, Stan Claxton, Jeff Hooks, Chuck Jarrell, John Claxton and Bryan Pryor, serving as Pallbearers. 5. Dr. Hooks, may all the sweet memories of your father bring you solace during this time. I hope that all the great moments that you were able to have with him before he passed away brings you a sense of comfort in the future.

  6. Kay, I hated to see that Jerry passed away. I’m thinking we are 3rd cousins. Fond memories when Jerry would come with your mom to visit my mom and grandma. Another cousin, Tyra, who passed a few years back,
and I thought he was the best looking man we knew. A lot of good times back then. Tyra would have been 80 this past March and my turn is in July.

  7. I’m so very sorry for the loss of our Uncle Jerry..He was loved by many, especially his family.. he always made me feel I was his favorite niece!! Maybe I was; maybe not . I’m sure he made all feel the same ..He was always ready with a laugh or a quick witted quip; or a story from earlier days.. a trait he inherited from his dad, my papa.. Uncle Jerry you were always a little larger than life to me and that’s how you lived! I remember you and Aunt Jean pulling up to a family reunion in a big red convertible-top down— it was like a celebrity has arrived!! Uncle Jerry you will be greatly missed but oh what a homecoming you must have had on Monday. The floors of heaven shook when everyone ran to greet you with open arms. You have been made whole by the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ! Hallelujah! We will all be reunited one day! I have always loved you so very much! 🥰🥰🙏🏻🙏🏻💔💔
