James E. Callan, Jr

James Edward Callan, Jr., 89, of Augusta passed peacefully October 5th, 2012 to rest in grace. A 47 year Augusta resident, Jim was most noted as a successful restaurateur, Saint Joseph’s hospital food administrator, general manager of the Waynesboro Country Club, country club consultant, tax preparer and business advisor to many long time Augusta residents. His popular Village Inn restaurant remained a famous Daniel Field landmark for over 20 years. Many remember Jim’s avid love of golf and bee husbandry.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, October 9th, at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Reverend Mark McLendon officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Born and reared in Chevy Chase , MD , Callan served our country as a naval test pilot on air craft carriers during World War II and continued his service in the Korean War. Upon retiring his wings, he pursued his passion for food and entertainment by innovating in food service at the academy in Annapolis and naval base in Norfolk , VA. Jim’s love of hospitality led him south, where he transformed and expanded the Savannah Yacht Club in Savannah , GA until he purchased the Village Inn and other restaurants in Augusta . His Village Inn was once noted in Newsweek as the world’s first fly-in, drive-in restaurant.
Jim, known for his disarming charm, could make even strangers smile and feel better about themselves. He and his family remained civically active and served in several Augusta churches during his residency. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Clara, and four children. He leaves a legacy of dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren throughout the mid-Atlantic and Midwest who shall miss their patriarch. Jim also leaves his dog, Princess, that provided him great joy was on his mind as he drifted in final sleep.
The family wants to thank the staff of the third floor of the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home, “The Blue Goose”, for the exceptional service and compassionate care that they extended to Mr. Callan during his last few years.
