Edward J. “Ed” Bible, Jr. – Retired Extension Agent
Augusta, GA. – After suffering a stroke on Mother’s Day of 2011, Edward Jackson Bible, Jr, 85, husband of Montine Roper Bible for a month shy of 64 years, entered into rest on February 29, 2012.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11:00 AM from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors with the Reverend Michael Holt, the Reverend Keith Cox, and the Reverend Roger Stone officiating.
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mr. Bible was born on the campus of Berry College where his parents were members of the Berry staff. He moved to Trenton, Dade County, Georgia, where he graduated from Dade County High School. He attended Berry College for one year before enlisting in the Navy in 1944 and serving as a cook on the USS Consolation, later to be named the USS Hope. Mr. Bible graduated from the University of Georgia in 1949 with a Bachelor in Science of Horticulture. Always a lover of flowers, he worked in flower shops over the years in Macon, LaGrange, and Augusta. In 1948, Mr. Bible married Montine Roper in the Barnwell Chapel on the campus of Berry College.
After college, Mr. Bible worked for the Georgia Agricultural Extension Service for 28 years teaching 4-H throughout Richmond County. Mr. Bible was a member of Mann Memorial United Methodist Church, and a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class. He belonged to the Burns Memorial United Methodist Church Happy Club, the Mann Buddy program, where he helped prepare meals once a month for our veterans, and the Barney’s Pharmacy Bingo Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Jackson Bible, Sr, and Willie Grace Christy Bible, and by a brother, George Bible.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by two sons, Edward Jackson Bible, III, (Jeanie) of Martinez, GA, and Andy Bible (Arlene) of Lilburn, GA. Also surviving are two sisters, Frances Scheidt of Knoxville, TN, and Martha Shires (Alton) of Tunnel Hill, GA; five grandchildren, Alicia Bible of Evans, GA, Brian Bible (Amy) of San Antonio, TX, Jennifer Craig of Lexington, SC, Jason Bible (Erika) of Evans, GA, and Charles Coleman of Lilburn, GA. Mr. Bible also had eight great grandchildren: Drew Bible, Caitlyn Craig, Elisabeth Bible, Adam Craig, Sidney Bible, Avery Bible, Kamber Bible, and Luke Bible.
The family is grateful to the staff of the nursing home, The Place at Martinez, especially Pam Hill, Christy Moore, Katie Bentley, and Candace Smiley, Regency Hospice, Barney’s Pharmacy, and Mr. Bible’s doctor and friend, Dr. Danny Newman. The family would also like to thank the many special friends that have stood by and supported the entire family through Mr. Bible’s struggle.
