Debra McDonald Welch

Augusta, GA – Debra McDonald Welch, 69, wife of Fred Welch, entered into rest Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at University Hospital.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 11, 2021, at 2:00 PM, from Burns Memorial United Methodist Church with Reverend John Donaldson officiating.

Debra, daughter of the late Elizabeth Hickman McDonald and Reverend Elvyn J. McDonald, was a graduate of Lincoln County High School, Young Harris College, and Augusta College. She retired from the Richmond County Board of Education after 36 years of teaching French and Japanese at Hephzibah High School. Prior to that she taught at Edmund Burke Academy, in Waynesboro, for four years. A devout Francophile, she taught and inspired several thousand students in the language, customs, cuisine, and history of France. Debra was the choir director at Burns Memorial United Methodist Church for over 40 years and the leader of their gospel ensemble, Harambe. She loved animals and was an avid trivia player.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. David McDonald.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons, Christopher Scott Welch, Zachary Andrew Welch, and Joshua Charles Welch; her grandchildren, Leo Welch and Phoebe Welch; her brother, Watson McDonald; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, December 11, from 1:00 PM until the hour of service, in the parlor of the church.
