Chaplain (LTC) Wade H. Houston Sr (Retired US Army)

Hephzibah, GA – Chaplain Wade H. Houston, Sr, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Eisenhower Army Medical Hospital.

Celebration of Life services will be held Thursday, March 8, 2018, at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors with Reverend Perry Key, pastor of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, and Chaplain Jeff Flowers, of Augusta University Hospital, officiating.

Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Mt Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery, 3965 Deans Bridge Rd, Hephzibah, GA.

Chaplain Houston was born December 20, 1931, in St. Cloud, MN to Wade Houston and Cora Houston. At the age of 16 he moved to Rock Hill, SC. He attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, where he graduated with a BS in Christian Education. In 1954, after marrying Louise Bell, of Atlanta, GA, he entered Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating with a B.D. in 1957. After pastoring in College Park, GA, he entered the Army as chaplain at Ft Gordon in 1960. He served three years in Germany before being assigned to Ft. Riley, KS, in Salina, KS, and then Vietnam, followed by Ft. Bliss, TX and Ft. Hamilton, NY where he attended the Army’s advanced Chaplain’s course. He was stationed at Ft. Hood, TX, following his completion of Chaplain’s school.

Leaving active duty in 1971, Wade entered CPE training at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, GA, before becoming the chaplain at South Fulton Hospital, as well as serving in the Reserves of the Alabama National Guard. In 1975, he moved to New Jersey where he served 21 years as chaplain at the East Orange VA Medical Hospital. While in New Jersey he received his D.M. in Hospital Ministry from Drew University.

Chaplain Houston is survived by his wife of 63 years, Louise Bell Houston; his children, Wade Houston Jr., of Marietta, GA, Lynda Jane Houston, of St Helena Island, SC, and Melody Houston Badger, of Hephzibah, GA; his grandchildren, Claire Tanner (Brian), of Thomson, GA, Trent Badger, of Idaho, John Badger (Heidi), of Utah, Lynn Badger, of Augusta, Anne Badger, of Augusta, and Grace Badger, of Augusta; his sisters, Lucille Reule and Thelma Hamilton, of Rock Hill, SC, Margaret Burnette, of York, SC, and Betty Bell, of Lithia Springs, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

If so desired memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, 3965 Deans Bridge Rd, Hephzibah, GA 30815, or to Toccoa Falls College, School of Nursing, 107 Kincaid Dr, Toccoa Falls, GA 30598.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 8, 2018, from 1:00 PM until the hour of service at the funeral home.
