Simless, Burt pic 2Augusta, GA – Burton Dwaine Simless, 87, husband of the late, Sue Laney Simless, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 26, 2017.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, December 3, 2017, at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Mike Cash officiating.

Mr. Simless was born on March 26, 1930 in Aneta, North Dakota to Herman and Hazel Anderson Simless. He was a graduate Aneta High School in Aneta, ND. Shortly thereafter he followed many of his siblings into the Armed Forces, serving two stints in the US Navy. After his honorable discharge he joined the administrative staff of the New Haven Railroad and later the Southern Railway. After a transfer to Jacksonville, FL, he met the love of his life, the former Sue Laney, who had recently relocated there to teach after graduating from Auburn University. Married for 57 years, Burt got both Sue and Auburn football in the deal. They relocated with the Southern Railway to Augusta, GA, in 1961. He was hired as one of the first employees of Columbia Nitrogen in 1963 and worked there until his retirement in 1992. After retirement, they enjoyed traveling, visiting all 48 lower states as well as many European countries before she passed away in 2016. He was also an avid golfer, playing weekly in the same group at Green Meadows Golf Club since 1992. He was a member of Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Simless; his brothers, Everett, Clarence, Leo, and John; and by his sisters Verna, Violet, Frances, and Dorothy.

He is survived by his brother. Herman (Irma) Simless, of Windsor, CO; two sisters-in-law, Avis (Leo) Simless, of Otsego, MI, and Mary McCarty, of Notasulga, AL; two sons, Jeff (Traci) Simless, of Evans, GA, and Scott Simless, of Tucker, GA; four grandchildren, JB (Kim) Simless, Trenee (Josh) Newman, Claire Simless, and Ty Simless; four great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Jackson, Colt, and Savannah; plus many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by the last of his golfing partners in the original 1992 group, Harry Yonce, of Evans, GA.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Damren Sunday School Class.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church, Debt Retirement Fund, 1330 Monte Sano Ave, Augusta, GA 30904, or to The Fisher House, Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, One Freedom Way, Augusta, GA 30904.

The family will receive friends Sunday, December 3, 2017, from 12:30 PM until the hour of service at the church.

  1. I was so sorry to here of Mr. Burt’s passing. What a wonderful man. I have many fond memories of Mr. Burt and his family. Always had a smile on his face,and treated all with respect and dignity. God speed Mr. Simless. Jeff and Scott, Terry and I pray for great comfort during this most difficult time. God bless.
