Betty Grimstead

Augusta, GA- Miss Betty Grimstead , 78, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 28, 2012 surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 11: 00 AM from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors with Reverends Rob Watkins and Carla Conditt Daniels officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jamie Yarbrough, Mark Yarbrough, Jason Yarbrough, David Yarbrough, Keith Davis and Gary Davis.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Covenant Presbyterian Church friends, SRP Retirees Breakfast Bunch and her niece Anna Ligon.
Betty was born May 28, 1934 in Tattnall County, Georgia to the late Mr. and Mrs. Otto Edward and Ruby Lucille Nail Grimstead.
She was a honor graduate of Augusta State University and retired after 40 years from the United States Atomic Engery Commission at the Savannah River Plant operated by E.I. Dupont for the Department of Engery. She was a Laboratory Instructor, graduating many laboratory technicians. After retirement she continued employment with Westinghouse and Savannah River Site.
Betty was an ordained Deacon and Ruling Elder, Trustee in the Presbyterian Church USA, a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church; she has served as Clerk of Session, Sunday School Youth Teacher, Adult Bible Teacher, Moderator of the Stewardship Committee, Worship Committee and Church Treasurer. She worked extensively with others in compiling the history of Covenant Church in preparation of their 40th Anniversary. She has served the Presbytery of North East Georgia as Coordinator of Session Records Examinations Committee. She always contributed to numerous charities of her choice, including the Greater Augusta Presbyterian Mission Ministries, Friendship Community Center and the Inner City Childrens GAP Camp.
She belonged to the Augusta Genealogical Society, Adamson Library and accomplished tracing her family history to some of the earliest settlers in Georgia. She was a avid camper, enjoying our state and national parks; she belonged to the CSRA Road Runners Camping Club serving as Chaplain. Betty enjoyed politics and was always a strong and vocal supporter of the candidate of her choice. She was a member of the Richmond Academy High School Alumni, The Augusta College Alumni, Retirement Association for Du Pont employees and the American Chemical Society. Betty’s greatest love was golf, and keeping up with her favorite players who played at the Master’s Tournament. For the past 50 years her joy was taking folks as her guest to the Master’s Tournament who had never been before. Betty was a patron of the Augusta Symphony, Augusta Players and was a avid fan of the Braves as well as the Universtiy Georgia BullDawgs.
“Miss Betty” graduated from college and within one week was employed by Du Pont (SRS), bought an automobile and not knowing how to drive learned by driving to work with others in a carpool who gave excellent driving lessons as she never had a collision; the carpool members reamined best friends even after retirement.
She was preceeded in death by her sister Edna Yarbrough Harris.
Survivors include her brother, Dale Grinstead of Augusta; sister, Lois Grimstead Davis of Augusta; Aunt “BeBe” was the loving aunt to six nephews and one niece, Keith Davis (Jodie) of Augusta, Gary Davis (Teresa) of Augusta, Jamie Yarbrough (Patti) of Sandersville, Mark Yarbrough (Janie) of Hephzibah, Jason Yarbrough of Hephzibah, David Yarbrough (Susan) of Grovetown, Anna Ligon of Augusta and numerous other loving great nephews, nieces, cousins , relatives and close friends.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Local Missions of Covenant Presbyterian Church 3131 Walton Way Augusta, GA 30909 or to ones favorite Charity.
The family will receive friends Monday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Carolyn Schlein Stone

Augusta, GA- Carolyn Schlein Stone , 66, wife of 49 years to Jimmy L. Stone, entered into rest Friday, July 20, 2012 at University Hospital .
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 23, 2012 at 11: 00 AM from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors with Reverend Michael Freed officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park .
Mrs. Stone was born in Augusta and daughter of the late James & Louise Hawkins Schlein. She was a homemaker and a member of Ascension Lutheran Church .
Additional survivors include her son Travis Stone of Augusta, her daughter Tracie Stone Landers and her husband Tim of Atlanta, her brother Louis Schlein of Grovetown , her sister, Barbara Schlein of Augusta and four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Tony Schlein, Greg Schlein, Joe Jones, Jim Beazley, Jeff Taylor and Allen Baldowski.

Vernon Mobley, Sr.

Augusta, GA – Mr. Vernon Lynn Mobley,Sr., 86, was welcomed into the arms of his Lord Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at his home. Mr. Mobley was preceeded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 53 years, Olivia Wolfe Mobley.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., on Friday, July 20, 2012 in Hillcrest Memorial Park with Reverend Jim Hyder officiating.
Vernon was a native and life long resident of Augusta. Wth his sharp mind and keen memory he delighted family and friends with interesting stories about the history of Augusta and stories of growing up on a dairy farm in the Turbin Hill area. He attended The Academy of Richmond County where he played football and baseball and was captain of the 1943 Varsity football team. After high school he served in the United States Navy during WWII. As a young man he played amateur baseball on the Augusta City and Georgia-Carolina Leagues. Later he would go on to coach many teams in the Fleming Communtiy.
Vernon worked at the Augusta Arsenal, Camp Gordon and then Fort Gordon where he was foreman of the Mechanical Section-Post Engineers. For many years he served on the Board of Directors at Green Meadows Country Club. Very near to his heart was his church family at Liberty United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School, served on the Official Board and was a Trustee. Because of his Christ-like character and humble spirit he leaves an amazing Godly legacy to all who love him especially to his sons and their families who were his dearest treasures.
He was preceeded in death by his parents James Harry Mobley and Viola Lynn Mobley Parker and his brothers Harry Mobley, Jr., and Thomas Mobley.
He is survived by his sons Vernon Mobley, Jr. (Beth) and David Mobley (Karen) both of Augusta; grandchildren Matthew Mobley (Jen), Melissa Jordan (Daniel), Mark Mobley, Brandon Mobley (Amanda) and Brooke Cooper (Drake); three great-grandchildren, Landon Mobley, Hudson Mobley and Anna Grace Jordan; brother Jack Mobley and a special friend Carolyn Simpson.

James B. Buckner, II

Hephzibah, GA – James Boyd Buckner,II, 31, entered into rest Sunday, July 8, 2012 at his residence.

He is survived by his children, Amber Walker and Adreanna Buckner; parents, James Boyd Buckner, Sr., and Diane Gibbs Buckner; brother, Phillip Donald Nathan Buckner; paternal grandfather, David Buckner, Sr., and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins whom he loved and they loved him.
Mr. Buckner was born in Augusta. He was a Truck Driver for J.S. Rowe and a member of New Life Baptist Church. He was a proud graduate of the American Truck Driving Academy where he earned his CDL.

Betty Ruth Hill

Augusta, GA – Betty Ruth Hill, 77, wife of the late James W. Hill, entered into rest Sunday, July 8, 2012, at her residence.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, July 12, at 1:00 PM from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors with Reverend Philip Vestal officiating.
Mrs. Hill was born in Anderson, SC and was a homemaker.
She is survived by her sons and daughters in law, Randall and Ruth Hill, of Harlem, and Keith and Dale Hill, of Keysville; her daughters, Sandra Thomas, Sheila Hill, and Melinda Rowell, all of Augusta; her son in law, Kelvin Rowell of Augusta; eleven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Seldon Free, Jr.

Augusta, GA – Seldon Free, Jr., 74, husband of Glenda Boyd Free, entered into rest Friday, July 6, 2012.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors this Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. with the Reverend John Kilpatrick officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mr. Free, a native of Tennessee, and the son of the late Seldon and Maggie Gibson Free, Sr., had made Augusta his home for most of his life. He loved to work in his yard and take care of his beloved wife and grandkids.
He was a member of Silvercrest Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a niece, Barbara Free.
Additional survivors include his sons, Calvin L. Mills and James R. Mills both of Waynesboro, GA; a brother, Jimmy Free of Blythe; grandchildren, Brian Mills, Jamie Mills, Drew Mills, J.R. Thomas W. Wilbanks

Evans, GA- Thomas W. Wilbanks husband of the late Dorothy Smith Wilbanks entered into rest Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Doctors Hospital.

Mr. Wilbanks was born in Trion, GA and son of the late Thomas Otra & Lula Mae Strickland Wilbanks. He was retired military where he served in the US Army, Navy and Marines. Mr. Wilbanks served tours in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

Mrs. Holmgren, daughter of the late Vernell and Nannon Cobb Booker, was a native of Deland, Florida. She was a Unit Secretary with St. Joseph Hospital.
She is survived by her son, Matt O’Rourke and his wife, Phyliss, of Athens, GA; her daughter, Deb Hattaway and her husband, Jimmy, of Augusta; her grandchildren, Kelley Thames and Bailey O’Rourke; and her great grandchildren, Shay Thames and Kresley Thames.
