The family will receive friends at the Family Life Center located beside Burns Memorial United Methodist Church , Saturday, August 28, 2010, from 2:00 until 4:00 pm.

Ms. Whitehead was born in Miami , FL and was a retired Educator with the Richmond County S c hool System. She was a graduate of Augusta College with a BA in Psychology. She received her
Master of Education in Special Education from West GA College and also had a Masters in School Counseling.  She held a first degree Black belt in Tae Kwon Do. She was an avid animal lover and had many precious dogs throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her father, Major Herbert St anley (Stan) Whitehead, Sr , US Army (Ret).

She is survived by her mother, Marion G. Whitehead, of Augusta ; brothers, Herbert St anley Whitehead, Jr, of Harlem , and Douglas J. Whitehead Sr and his wife, Caroline, of Augusta; sisters, Susan W. Johnson, of Augusta, and Carolyn R. Phares and her husband, Mathue, of Martinez; nephews, Christopher Shaun Whitehead, David A. Johnson, Herbert Stanley Whitehead, III, Tyler D. Phares, Douglas J. Whitehead, Jr, and Carl Mitchell Whitehead; niece, Kim Abrecht; and family friend, Cheryl Jones.  She also leaves behind her “babydog” Kati.

Augusta, GA – Mr. David Lee Snipes, 47, entered into rest, Friday, August 27, 2010, at University Hospital.

David was born in Anderson, SC and grew up in Laurens, SC. He loved the outdoors especially hunting deer, fishing and his two dogs Daisy and Scrappy. He was a member of Fleming Baptist Church and a pipe fitter for Local 150.

Survivors include his mother, Judy Snipes of Augusta, GA; father, Raymond Snipes of Cherokee, NC; sons, Travis Lee and Raymond Joshua Snipes both of Augusta, GA; daughters, Amanda Leigh Snipes of Augusta, GA and Tiffany Norton of Laurens, SC; brother, Randy Snipes of Augusta, GA; sister, Sydney Prescott of Augusta,GA, Kelly Gardner of Ashland, MO, Shaye Templeton of Laurens, SC and Sheela Freeland of Greenville, SC; one granddaughter, Kaleigh Moriah Frady.

Marian F. Johnson Retired Southern Bell

Augusta, GA – Mrs. Marian F. Johnson, 80, of Wallie Dr ive , wife of forty-three years to Billy S. Johnson, entered into rest, Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at the residence.

Mrs. Johnson, daughter of the late Alonzo and Martha Phillips Fitzgerald, retired after thirty-five years from Southern Bell .  She was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Jane F. Eve, Kay Pierson, and Beverly McBeath.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son Joey Dozier and his wife, Linda, of Hephzibah; step son Phillip Johnson, of Augusta ; daughter Rene Dozier Ciccio and her husband, Frank, of Blythe; brothers Butch Fitzgerald and his wife, Diane, of Augusta , and Tom Fitzgerald and his wife Cerelia, of North Augusta, SC; sister Shirley Greaves, of Augusta; grandchildren, Ron Carter, Traci Adams and her husband, Mike, Len Dozier, Kelly Tully and her husband, Rick, Elizabeth Johnson, and Casey Johnson, and great grandchildren, Hollie Roberts, Brittany Carter, Chase Dozier, and Laura-Kate Tully

Victor Neal Hudson, Sr.

Augusta, GA – Victor Neal Hudson, Sr., 63, of Lovell Circle, Augusta, entered into rest, Sunday, August 22, 2010, at the Uptown Divison of the VA Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held from the graveside, in Hephzibah-Vance Cemetery, on Wednesday, August 25, at 12:00 PM with Dr. Larry Beam officiating.

Mr. Hudson, a native of Whiteville, VA, was a longtime resident of the Augusta area and a former resident of Baltimore, MD. He had served his country with two tours of Vietnam in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the Jack C. Fortune American Legion, Post No. 205. He was of the Protestant Faith.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Douglas “Mac” Hudson.

Survivors include his son, Victor Neal, Jr.; daughters, Jeani Hudson and Becky Nepfel; siblings, Larry Hudson, Donna Barnhart and Becky Carr; as well as ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Vernon Briggs

Thomson, GA – Vernon Briggs, 89, husband of 70 years to Mrs. Marion Turner Briggs of Ridge Road, Thomson, entered into rest, Thursday, August 19, 2010, at the McDuffie County Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held from the graveside in Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Monday, August 23, at 2:00 PM. with the Reverend Rodney Peavey officiating. The family and friends will assemble at the graveside.

Mr. Briggs, son of the late William R. and Gladys Prather Briggs, was a lifelong resident of the Augusta area and had retired from the King Mill. He was an avid Braves Baseball fan and a savedChristian. His family said he was an angel of light that showed his children the right road to life.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Carl H. Briggs and Ronald Wayne Briggs.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Victor and Martha Briggs of Martinez, Benny and Lynda Briggs of Harlem; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Donald Hicks of Thomson, LaVerne and Gary Lord of Augusta; eleven grandchildren, twenty six great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

Thomas Lowe, Sr. Retired Remodeler

Augusta, GA – Thomas Lowe, Sr. 65, beloved husband of thirty two years to Joyce Ellen Bevil Lowe of Kissingbower Rd., entered into rest, Sunday, August 15, 2010, at Doctor’s Hospital.

Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors, Wednesday, August 18, at 10:00 A.M. with the Dr. Eddie West officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery.

Mr. Lowe, was a self-employed home remodeler and had worked for Outdoor Display as a truck driver. His family said that he was an intelligent man who enjoyed playing cards, collecting guns, fishing and watching western movies.  He was of the Pentecostal Faith and a member of Fairview Church of God.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Julie Lowe, Jr. of Savannah, GA, Robert Wayne and Gloria Lowe of Aiken, SC and Perry L. and Tammy Lowe also of Aiken, SC; daughters and sons-in-law, Teri and Johnny Youmans of North Augusta, Theresa and Frank Lee of Walnut Ridge, AR, Sherry and Thomas Jones of North Augusta, Karen Gregory-Susi of Augusta and Whitney Gregory of Scotsdale, AZ; sisters, Frances Moseley of Augusta, Myrtis White and Virginia Hill both of Aiken, SC; he was very blessed to have twenty one grandchildren, Sharlana, Darrien, Priscilla, Robbie, Ryan, Amanada, Allie, Matthew, Austin, Cameron, Ellen, Wesley, Hope, Brandon, Shane, Cash, Cirstin, Sharissa, Ricky, Whitney, and Chris, Jr.; as well as two great grandchildren.

Mr. Cephas J. Barwick – Retired Civil Service

Martinez, GA – Mr. Cephas J. Barwick, 92, husband of Mary Lee Meyer Barwick of Plantation Road, entered into rest Thursday, August 12, 2010 at Doctors Hospital.

Mr. Barwick, son of the late Morris and Sarah Flanders Barwick, was born in Emanuel County, Georgia. He was a member of Whispering Pines Baptist Church and retired from civil service at Fort Gordon. He served with the Army Air Corp and was a veteran of World War II.

William Eugene “Gene” Collins – Salesman Davidsons/Macys

Augusta, GA – Mr. William Eugene “Gene” Collins, 83, entered peacefully into rest, Thursday, August 5, 2010, at University Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 7, at 11:00 am, from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors, with Minister Frank Londino officiating.
Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
Mr. Collins was a lifelong resident of Augusta and was one of the top salesmen at Davidsons/Macys for thirty-nine years. Widely known as everyone’s friend, he grew up in Augusta’s Harrisburg neighborhood and began delivering newspapers at the age of ten. During the Second World War he served with the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater. After the war he began working for the Augusta Fire Department at Station Number 7, as a fireman. Then, encouraged by a local businessman to get into sales, Gene began his sales career and never left it. Throughout his career he was consistently recognized as one of the top salesman in the company, receiving numerous awards and bonuses, including a 1973 red Chevrolet Camaro.
With the appliance business knowledge he learned during his Davidsons/Macys career, he opened a used appliance business which he operated for several years after his retirement from Davidsons/Macys. His easy-going personality and being well liked made him a winner at this as well. His passing will be noted by many of Augusta’s old-time salesmen and friends.
Mr. Collins is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Leigh Collins, of North Augusta, SC; sons, Peter Christopher Collins, of Augusta, and Mark Anthony Collins, of Norcross, GA; his sister, Dorothy Page, of Augusta; and one grandson, Jason Anthony Londino, of Augusta.
